The Triumph of Cosmic Love over Darkness and Tyranny

Long ago, the city of Mathura groaned under the brutal rule of King Kansa, a tyrant whose cruelty knew no bounds. Driven by insatiable ambition, Kansa overthrew his own father, King Ugrasena, and cast the kingdom into fear. Yet, destiny had already marked the end of his dark reign.

On the day of Kansa’s sister Devaki’s wedding to the noble Prince Vasudeva, a thunderous voice echoed from the heavens: "O foolish Kansa! The eighth child born to your sister Devaki shall be the cause of your destruction!"

Panicked and enraged, Kansa immediately imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva within the cold, high-walled dungeons of Mathura. To secure his fate, he mercilessly ended the lives of their first seven newborn infants one by one, keeping the couple under heavy guard.

The dark, stormy night of Bhadrapada Ashtami arrived. The rain poured down in torrential waves, thunder roared, and the Yamuna River surged violently. At the stroke of midnight—the sacred Nishita Kaal—Lord Vishnu manifested before Devaki and Vasudeva in His divine four-armed form, illuminating the pitch-black cell. He instructed Vasudeva to carry Him immediately across the river to Gokul, to the home of Nanda Baba and Yashoda, and exchange Him with their newborn baby girl.

In an instant, a divine miracle unfolded: the guards fell into a deep sleep, the heavy iron chains dropped off Vasudeva, and the locked prison doors swung wide open.

Vasudeva placed the infant Krishna in a woven wicker basket and carried Him on his head into the raging storm. As he waded into the roaring Yamuna River, the waters rose dangerously high. Recognizing its Supreme Master, the river touched Krishna’s lotus feet and immediately receded. The celestial serpent, Adishesha, emerged from the waters, spreading his multi-headed hood over the basket like an umbrella to protect the divine child from the lashing rain.

Reaching Gokul safely, Vasudeva quietly made the swap and returned to Mathura before dawn broke. When Kansa entered the cell to eliminate the eighth child, the infant girl miraculously soared into the sky, transforming into the eight-armed Goddess Yogamaya. She warned Kansa before vanishing: "Your destroyer has already been born, and He is safe in Gokul!"
